As part of our 2022 research report, “Retooling R&D for a New Era,” we asked leaders of R&D and innovation groups at large companies about how often they employ open innovation techniques. This report was underwritten by Wazoku. We defined open innovation as sourcing ideas from customers, entrepreneurs, and academics outside of their organization.

How to use this visualization: Pull down the “Industry,” “Company Size,” or “Region” menus at right to sort the data of respondents based on those criteria. Some filters may not have enough responses to show data. You can also click the “down arrow” at bottom right to download the data in various formats.

According to our 78 survey respondents, the vast majority of R&D and innovation groups practice open innovation techniques either on a regular or sporadic basis. Only 13 percent of all respondents said they had not practiced open innovation or were unsure if they had. Of those who had, 47 percent of all respondents said they did so regularly, while 40 percent did so sporadically. In this survey, 79 percent of our respondents were at the Director level or above.
