In most companies, there is a corporate calendar in which strategies are baked and resources are allocated. Innovation needs to be part of that. So, how do teams find a seat at the table?

In his third commandment, Moisés Noreña explores the importance of alignment and how teams can get there.

“There are multiple ways, but one is to find the person that actually puts together those agendas, most likely someone on the strategy team,” says Noreña, former Head of Innovation at Whirlpool, Allstate, and Moen. “Make good friends with her. Understand which ways innovation can be part of the agenda.”

In addition to finding a person who can include you in strategy discussions, Noreña shares four other tips:

  • Master the growth objectives at your company, and know what metrics matter.
  • Gain a sponsor by finding an open-minded person in the business unit and running a quick-win project that helps them understand how innovation can meet their needs.
  • Be involved in monthly or quarterly business reviews.
  • Find a way to inspire employees throughout the organization.
